Emily Dickinson absorbs her predecessors" views on nature and shares the Romantic tradition and poetics. She reflects their themes and words in her various types of poems. However, she transforms them in her own creative ways. She expresses the new ways of perceiving nature and world, the new modes of experience, and especially the new relations of the individual consciousness to nature, imagination and self. She creates her own unique art by altering the British and American Romantics" views and revises their inherited themes and language in her critical and creative reactions. Against their male canon, she also clarifies her relation to the Romantic imagination and her subversion of its underlying assumptions. Dickinson who is against the excessive romantic sensibility grants autonomy and authority to her sense by using unfamiliar and new words in her own unique ways and builds her autonomous world of poetry. By doing so, her work in the 19th century already takes into account the modernity which is a heterogeneous and multifarious compound. She does what only the greatest poets do.
