Metaphoric Expressions are prevalent in daily life as well as in our thought and action, not confined to literary works or rhetorical use. Human cognitive system that governs our thoughts and action is basically metaphorical. This paper presents various definitions and types of metaphors, especially focusing on the practical use of orientational metaphoric expressions like front/back, up/down, and right/left. It is viewed that they are not arbitrary but have a basis in our physical and cultural experience. Though the polar oppositions, up/down, etc., are physical in nature, the orientational metaphors based on them may vary from culture to culture according to the observers` empathy perspective.
