The purpose of this study is to investigate constraints, if any, on the word orders of first and second elements that make up coordinate NPs. The previous studies only partially examined word orders in coordinate NPs in idiomatic phrases since the semantic characteristics of such phrases have huge operations. That is, while idiomatic coordinate structures are also designed in the format of first and second elements, they are presented as a unit of frozen meaning. Given that there is no phenomenon of frozen meaning in non-idiomatic coordinate NPs, it is estimated that word orders will have relatively high variability. Paying close attention to those aspects, the investigator examined the mechanisms working between the two components of coordinate NPs according to hierarchies. As a result, the following mechanisms that control the word orders of components in coordinate NPs seem to play central roles: familiarity, topic and comment, conventions, definiticity and referentiality, social status and role, dominant descriptor, and formal hierarchies.
