The purpose of this study was to investigate how much constraint, if any, theme and rheme would have on the word order of binomial idioms based on the premise that the concepts of theme and rheme could be dichotomized from the perspective of sentence functions. The old views of sentences had been delivered by the formal division between the subject and predicate. Danes, however, introduced theme and rheme from the perspective of value delivery by sentences instead of the subject and predicate; Firbas dichotomized sentences into theme and rheme based on communicative dynamic; and Halliday divided information into new and old information according to volume. As a dichotomy according to perspectives from which to see through sentences, such a division focused on rather different perspectives from the traditional grammar. For instance, antecedents(former) have less value to deliver, lower communicative dynamic, and smaller volume of information to deliver than consequents according to the segmentation (division) of delivery value by Danes, communicative dynamic by Firbas, and the principle of information volume by Halliday. On the contrary, consequents(latter) have more value to deliver, higher communicative dynamic, and bigger volume of information to deliver. When the frequency principle of Zipf is applied, antecedents have a higher frequency, while consequents have a relatively lower frequency. This study examined whether theme and rheme would have explanatory power and constraint over the word order of binomial idioms with a quantitative(statistical) method by using the frequency device of Zipf. As a result, the hit rate was the highest in the order of (7) > (8) > (11) > (10) > (12) > (13) > (9) > (14). In general, the word order hit rate of binomial idioms in German was 72.5%, which indicates that it is as restrictive as cognitive and phonological constraint and should be treated as significant findings in terms of linguistic statistical processing.
