Building containers have become very wide-spread in the construction industry and are used mainly in Europe. The purpose of this study was to analyze the planning characteristics and it"s application of container architecture as case study. Field survey was used to analyze and classify the spatial characteristics in terms of floor plan, spatial composition, materials, colors and facilities of seven famous building containers in Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Paris of Europe. The results of this study were as follows; most building containers in Europe had good credits in sustainable and flexible planning by the advantages of a flexible interior space and mobile building system. Especially, some student housings by building containers also had good conditions in habitability in terms of residents’ satisfaction and psychological responses for the development of temporary dwelling space. The results of this study suggest that container architecture not only has typical benefits of prefabricated building such as shorter build time and budget reduction, but also can get above sustainability, flexibility and habitability. This research can be a basis for the application of the container architecture to the multi-purpose buildings for various kids of use.
