초록· 키워드

This article aims at exploring the difference in the similarity between Korean writer Shin, kyung sook and English modernist Virginia Woolf. Both novelists take ‘mother’ motif for their most famous works and get similar heated reponses from the media and readers. However, the mothers in their works are quite different. For Woolf, mother seems to be a ‘void’ without enough interaction as mother and daughter. As a result, mother leaves Woolf deep mental scars and fixation in her real life and it is represented in the work as it is, especially in To the Lighthouse.
In contrast, Shin’s Please Look after Mom offers us mom vividly as we can meet in everyday life. It shows a mom who sacrifices herself for her children with love and also who is very strong enough to protect them against many difficulties. So, when the mom was missing, every family member missed her in their own respective memory and realizes how much she was/is important in their lives.
As such, though mother motif plays a big role in both novels, the way it is represented and how it influences the characters in the works are quite different. This article focuses on this difference and assumes it may be originated from the different notion between ‘mother’ in the Western World and ‘mom’ in the Oriental world based on the biographical facts of Virginia Woolf.
