Against Eratosthenes of Lysias is a judicial speech (genus iudiciale), in the rhetorical style. Lysias is a well-known logographus, but in this speech it is Lysias himself who has taken legal action and has delivered the speech. Above all, it is a judicial speech, as Lysias raised a lawsuit against Eratosthenes who would kill Lysias’ brother Polemarchus under the Thirty Tyrants (Triakonta) in 404-403 B.C. But the importance of Against Eratosthenes to the Athenians at that time should not be overlooked as Lysias accused the Thirty Tyrants in this speech.
The main focus of this study is to provide an historical reevaluation of Lysias’ democratic political diagnosis and prescription of the crises in Athens during the late fifth century BC regarding internal conflicts, disasters, settlement problems and political affairs after the Peloponnesian War. The first half of this study consists of analyzing the speech as a whole, within the framework of classical rhetoric, and evaluating the validity of Lysias’ argument. After this rhetorical interpretation, the second part of this study is aimed at clarifying and explaining how Against Eratosthenes contains important public and political aspects, by taking note of its historical background and the period in which this speech would have been delivered.
In short, Against Eratosthenes has two main performative meanings: it could influence political life directly as the agenda of democrats at that time; it could also reflect the political life vividly as propaganda for radical democrats. Therefore this speech is not only a political speech (genus deliberativum), but it is also valued as an ancient exemplum of rhetoric and oration with the capacity to appeal to settlements of the past during postwar crises.
