The purpose of this study was three-fold: 1) to compare tough with essential constructions, focusing on grammaticality of constructing sentences, 2) to analyze their constructions, and 3) to show the syntactic differences in their complement structures based on Chomsky’s (2000, 2001a, 2004) Phase theory and Hicks’s (2003) approach. First of all, in regard to the first purpose, for example, in Tough constructions, the object of the infinitival complement clauses, can appear in the main subject position, which is not allowed in essential constructions, however. After that, I would explain how they are different from each other by using Hicks’s approach and Collins’s Smuggling (2005a, 2005b). To do this, I first would detail Hick’s approach and Collins’s Smuggling approach. With these two approaches, we can not exactly predict the grammaticality of an adjective construction such as essential as well as the overgeneralization of sentences. In this study, I argued that adjectives select complementary structures suitable for their selectional properties such as verbs. I concluded this study by summarizing some problematic aspects of both approaches and suggesting probable solutions to the problems.
