Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of gesture-command condition on the recall time of gesturecommand when control a TV equipped with vision based gesture recognition system. Background: Based on the previous study (Lim et al., 2012) which had investigated conditions of gesture-command, subjective preference and the agreement score were two measurements being able to describe a gesture-command. In this study, the recall time for a gesture matching to a given command, was investigated to test the effect of difference gesture-command pairing condition. Method: Recall time was defined as the time required for retrieving the target gesture matching to a given command. Ten undergraduate students were recruited for data collection. Two sets of selected gesture-command pair which had been counter balanced with subjective preferences and agreement scores. Experiment has two phases, learning phase and data collection phase. In the learning phase, participants were requested to remember 8 gesture-command pairs. In data collection phase, participants were asked to performed gesture to match a given command randomly appeared. Results: Average recall times showed difference between high subject preference group(1.017 sec) and low subject preference group(1.123 sec)(p<0.05), however, agreement score did not show statistically significant effect on recall time. Conclusion: Average recall time is effected by subject preference, however, is not effected by agreement score. Application: The result of this study could provide guidance in designing a gesture based interaction, especially when the interaction is time critical.
