The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the communicative play and games for improving elementary students' English communicative competence. For this purpose, experimental lessons using communicative plays and games were conducted with 6th grade students in experimental group. On the other hand, regular lessons were given to the students in control groups. To compare the effect of the lessons of these two groups, - and post- questionnaires, listening, writing and speaking tests focusing on the fluency were given and the results were compared. Results showed an improvement in students' interest and participation and the writing and speaking ability focusing on fluency. On the other hand, the listening skill was not improved. This study concludes with pedagogical suggestions that will be useful for communicative English teaching and test design.
