This study examines pre-service elementary teachers' perspective changes on teaching English in English(TEE) at the elementary school level. Mixed methods of survey and journal analyses of 76 pre-service teachers' were employed in order to identify their understanding of the essential element of successful TEE practice. The results show that pre-service teachers typically have a misconception that the most essential element for successful TEE practice is teachers' English language proficiency, which entails a failure to recognize that elementary students will have difficulty understanding the teacher's proficient speech as their exposures to the language are typically limited. The study reports on the processes of the pre-service teachers' realizations that the learners' comprehensibility is the most critical element for successful TEE practice and that teacher's abilities to use simplified speech and visual support need to be first utilized for TEE at the elementary school level. The study also discuses implications of the findings as they relate to more effective pre-service teacher education in TEE.
