This study is to clarify the man's true life through the comparative analysis of two characters' unhappy fate and end. Theodore Dreiser, who represents the naturalism in American literature, is a writer who focuses on vanishing morals and dignity of man in a modern society. He insists that man's free will can't be practiced in a mechanical and material civilization. That is to say, human beings are helpless when their existence is determined by the external circumstances and the superficial impulses. William Faulkner tries to explain the man's inner truth and emotion through depicting the deep South of America. He, like Dreiser, deals with the mental poverty and the lacks of ethics although we live in more abundance than in past times. In conclusion, the two writers emphasize the importance of responsible deeds and generosities through two characters' paralyzed conscience. With the comparative analysis of two tragic characters, the main point is that we can only lead the true dignified life if we accomplish our desires and great plans based on morality and ethics.
