This study examines the use of novel noun + noun constructions in the English essays of Korean university students. From an essay corpus, 226 problematic noun + noun compounds were identified. These were classified in terms of the type of resulting error. By far, the most frequent error was the use of a noun (such as history) in the attributive position rather than a related adjective (the more appropriate historical). Another error found was the use of pre-modification rather than post-modification, possibly due to L1 influence or to avoid post-modification forms the learners are less familiar with. A separate analysis was performed on the subclass of instances in which nouns were used instead of related adjectives to examine the formal relationship between the nouns and adjectives. Most of the errors were with denominal adjectives (adjectives formed by adding suffixes to nouns, such as historical), and the fewest errors were with de-adjectival nouns (nouns formed from adjectives, such as happiness).
