This study examines the natural scientific writings of Jonathan Edwards, which are closely related to the context of Puritanism. The study has two purposes: One is to trace a historical example of a Protestant spirit that is harmonized to a modern scientific worldview. The other is to establish a theoretical basis for a constructive dialogue between religion and science, insisting that Edwards’ scientific writings have helped create a metaphysical rationale for physical science.
The values of anti-authoritarianism, individual liberty, and rationality which represent the spirit of Puritanism stimulated scientific investigation. Edwards did his own scientific research within the ethos of Puritanism. As a result, he published several papers with respect to science, which includes not only a general treatment of “natural philosophy” but also works dealing with atoms, refraction of light, meteors, insects, etcs. Edwards sought to harmonize his scientific interests and his religious faith.
This paper will explore Edwards’ scientific interests and objectives which are connected to his religious objectives, that is to praise God’s majesty and providence. The study demonstrates that Edwards’ scientific research coherently maintained God’s sovereignty. In the first section, it describes the significance of the relation between Puritanism and modern scientific study. The second section explains the general characters of Puritanism, chiefly dealing with the New England Puritan tradition. Section three divides Edwards’ scientific study into two parts: his philosophical reflections which discuss the nature of substance, and his natural scientific observations. The paper contends that Edwards thoroughly conducted his scientific exploration under the assumption of the sovereignty and providence of God, with the goal of giving a rational explanation for the relationship between Christian faith and modern science. The final section suggests not only several critiques of Edwards" scientific research, but also his values and importances.
