Objective: Evaluation of impact of sensory feedback on smartphone user performance of the elderly. Background: The number of elderly smartphone users has been increasing with the expansion of smart device usage. According to existing literature, the elderly users are reluctant to use smartphones because of decreasing physical, physiological and psychological abilities, and also negative attitude. This study focused on identifying proper feedback for the elderly who suffer from the decreasing sensory abilities. Method: Using 24 senior subjects, the study was conducted to investigate effects of two tactile feedbacks (no tactile feedback, tactile feedback), two visual feedbacks (no magnification, magnification), and three sound feedbacks (no sound feedback, normal sound feedback, verbal sound feedback) on usage time, error rate, and subjective satisfaction. Results: The results showed that both sound feedback and visual feedback reduced usage time on given tasks. The usage time was even decreased when sound feedback and tactile feedback were presented simultaneously. The error rate was also decreased with synchronous visual feedback and sound feedback. Likewise, subjective satisfaction was the highest for the same feedback condition. Conclusion: The study suggested optimal feedback guidelines for the elderly smartphone users and some practical issues for smartphone designers. Application: The results of this study can be used as supporting data for smartphone design.
