    Vibrio vulnificus is a causative agent of septicemia by secretion of various virulence factors, one of which is represented by an elastase, VvpE. Zymograhic analysis of the V. vulnificus secretome showed the presence of multiple extracellular proteases in addition to VvpE. One of them is identified as a metalloprotease, VvpM, which contains a Zn-binding motif and an active site for a typical Zn-metalloprotease. Human cells challenged to the recombinant VvpM (rVvpM) showed typical apoptotic-positive phenotypes including morphological changes in nucleus and mitochondria.
