Immobilized Alcaligenes faecalis, a typical heterotrophic nitrifer, was added to activated sludge to make A. faecalis which is a predominant genus in activated sludge. The objects of present study was to improve the conventional activated sludge processes for removal of organic materials and nitrogen and to change microbe in aeration tank by immobilized A. faecalis. The results of this study indicated that the activated sludge systems containing immobilized A. faecalis was more effective than those only containing activated sludge removing nitrogen. In addition, the maximum nitrogen removal efficiency was observed when the rate of packed volume was 30% in the aeration tank and the hydraulic retention time was 8 hr. It can be said that A. faecalis, the heterotrophic nitrifier, has not been involved in the BOD removal. Although A. faecalis was expected to be involved in the BOD, it is explained that the low increase of the removal rate is due to the low BOD loading rate. The predominate biota was changed by the addition of the immobilized A. faecalis.
