The goal of this article is 1) to know what value system, emotionalcharacteristics, and criminal mind the Korean serial killer (Yoo, Young-Chul) has, who reportedly killed 21 persons out of blind anger and hostility toward women and rich people since late 2003 and 2)to understand the reason why he only responded to a female reporter who had wrote about his adolescence.
The method used in this study is a phenomenological approach which is helpful for understanding actor's behavior from his or her own subjective point of view. Yoo's letter, narrative, and favorite movie, novel, music, and drama was analysed to learn about his way of thoughts.
Interviews with his friends and magazine reporter who appears to be in rapport with him by mailing were also conducted.
This study reveals that 1) his value system is characterized by rebellion against middle-class value, ignorance of authority, and revengetowards society through his own criminal revolution; 2) his emotional characteristics is directly related to loneness and strong feelings of escape from reality; 3) the reasons why he still write a letter to the reporter is because he wants to control her or is in rapport with her.
