According to existing studies, ruminating about a negative events that provoked the frustrative emotion increases the level of anger and the likelihood of aggressive activation. And dysfunctional automatic thoughts makes effects on this cognitive process. The present study examined qualitatively the effect of rumination on the cognitive distortion and the level of anger through the diary writing design. The experimental condition was the two types of social frustration with the imprecise and intangible provocateur, one is the failures by unjustifiable means and the other, arbitrary but socially acceptable means.
The result showed that the characteristics of the provocateur and the dysfunctional automatic thoughts made effects on the rumination. The dysfunctional automatic thoughts function resulted in having a combined effects with the social acceptability on the level of anger and the aggression. Especially, the individual attitude to the social acceptability was found to function as a medium between the dysfunctional automatic thoughts and the its effects on the anger and the aggression, so this attitude was defined as the Probability of Social Acceptance.
