Through his critics on Oeam(畏庵) Yi Sik(李식: 1659∼1729)`s "Tangshiming"(堂室銘), Seongho(星湖) Yi Ik(李瀷: 1681∼1763) emphasized the continuity between Xin(心) and the heart(心臟) and at the same time the transcendence of Xin as shenming(神明). He criticized that Oeam didn`t understand the individuality of Xin by identifying the shengming of Tiandi(天地) and that of human being, and so failed to catch the nature of moral subjectivity. Seongho thought that the Xin as a moral subject in the first instance is an individual which has it`s root in the heart of the body and at the same time in it`s practice transcends the extent of the heart, being concerned with the whole body. And it is the center of human activity of ganying(感應) which on the basis of that bodily identity receives and responds to the external world with his moral consciousness. According to Seongho, human being is different from other beings like plants, animals and Tiandi (天地) in that only he has such a Xin. Seongho`s theory of mind was a product of ChoseonXinglixue(朝鮮性理學), but also prepared him to respond against the theory of spirit(靈魂) of Xixue(西學).
