Puritan faith was totally and entirely based upon Calvinistic theology in terms of the Supremacy and Sufficiency of the Bible as the inspired word of God. As Korean Presbyterian Church claims to be reformed in theological foundations we have difficulties to say so at this present times we live, because there is no place for the truth in areas of our ministry. So this paper introduces typical elements of Calvinism such as “sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria.” These principles are well permeated in the Puritan movement of 17th century England. The Puritans were known to be ‘people of the Book’ since then. They made their congregations to be true Christians as a light and salt of the world, The channel they used to make them so was solely Kerygma, pure preaching of the Word.
There is no other way for Christian Church to be reformed except God should be a teacher of all believers. But God teaches them through a servant of the Word. All preachers should be confined themselves in their ministry to the revealed Word of God. The pulpit of modern Church, however, became an information centre. True preacher is the one who proclaim the truth only, never try to fill the pulpit with people but with the Word of God. But the effects of Puritan preaching did not remained only in church life but in their social daily life. They were required to follow the lessons they have got from the pulpit. They kept Sabbath day as holy day for God’s glory. It produced powerfully godly life on the basis of justification by faith alone.
We need to rediscover such powerful preaching with theological conviction of Calvinism in Christian ministry today. God may have a mercy on us!
