The competition in speed and price in marine logistics is becoming even more intense, particularly after the start of the transportation of high-priced goods and farm fresh products. In the same vein, demand on cargo state monitoring and cargo location tracking is also increasing.
Multiple technologies are being developed for the container state monitoring to meet this demand. However, it is difficult to apply the technologies on the whole section of marine logistics exposed to various environments, including land transportation and marine transportation, because the technologies can only be applied in partial logistics section or the technologies do not support bidirectional communication. In particular, the existing RFID can only perform mono-directional communication by simply forwarding the information stored in a tag. Therefore, it is not possible to use RFID in continuous container monitoring in global marine logistics environment demanded of various user requirements.
For the resolution of these issues, this study suggests an IP-RFID system for continuous monitoring so that the user requirement in global marine logistics of container usage would be met. Moreover, this study verified the possibility of monitoring and control in the logistics section through the results of the real environment test in land transportation at port and on ships.
