The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aspects of the markings of animacy in English in terms of prototypicality effects. It is argued that the animacy markings of nouns in –er agentive nouns, the so-called possessor noun in the two kinds of genitive constructions, and adjective+noun combinations involve the prototypicality effects in different ways. First, –er agentive nouns are argued to show the prototypicality effect in terms of the four levels of animacy gradience in animacy hierarchy. Second, the choice or alternation between ’s gentive and of genitive in English also shows the effect in terms of the gradience in the token frequency of animate nouns. Third, the prototypicality effect in adjective+noun combinations depends on which meaning of the adjectives has the more token frequency of combinations with animate nouns. Fourth, the adjective+preposition combinations matter to determine the effect in the animacy of their subjects or objects. Fifth, the complements of prepositions show the prototypicality effect in terms of the token frequency and syntactic superiority effect.
