This paper investigates the structure of the NP1-for-NP2 sequence by comparing two different types of accounts for the sequence. One follows the Minimalist framework where the sequence is proposed to be a small clause whose predication is mediated by the functional head Pred0. This type of accounts proposes for to be an overt form of the functional head. The other type of accounts is based on a mono-clausal assumption that treats the sequence as double object arguments. That is, for-NP2 is proposed to be a goal argument of a double object verb. This paper argues that the small clause analysis should be preferred to the double object analysis by discussing theoretical flaws and empirical examples against the latter analysis. A new account is intended to deal with potential problems while capturing legitimate insights of both types of accounts.
