Cellulose nanofibril (CNF) extracted from wood fibers has unique properties such as high aspect ratio, nano-dimension in width, and high mechanical strength. With these advantages, it was expected that CNF can be utilized as a strengthening agent for old paper documents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of CNF as a strengthening agent. The CNF suspension was treated on the surface of the two kinds of paper samples: commercial paper made of bamboo fibers and wood fibers, and old book consisting of bamboo fibers. The coat weight of CNF could be adjusted by controlling consistency of CNF suspension. The removal of excessive CNF with blotting paper after brushing CNF showed better repeatability compared to no blotting treatment. The CNF treatment improved the strength of the both of the paper made of bamboo fibers and wood fibers and the old book. The tensile index and folding endurance were linearly increased with the coat weight of CNF. In addition, the surface treatment of CNF on the printed old book did not deteriorate readability. It was suggested that CNF be suitable as a strengthening agent for old paper documents.
