Buddhaghośa is a central figure, especially in the commentary tradition of Theravāda Buddhism. His scholarship was under the patronage of the orthodox Mahāvihāra temple of Ceylon, known as Sri Lanka in modern times. Being indebted to his work, the Mahāvihāra has been hailed as representative of the Theravāda. His views are evident in the Samantapāsādikā, the commentary on the Vinaya and the Visuddhimagga, the encyclopedic work on Theravāda Buddhism. These texts seem to suggest that one of the purposes of the Atthakathā was to give satisfaction to the elders who sought to bolster their power over the Abhayagiri, although, of course this was not the only reason. Buddhaghośa’s works supported the philosophical and political development of the Mahāvihāra, as, based on these works, monks in residence at the Mahāvihāra were then able to compile the sub-commentaries, hence, the Abhidhammatthasangaha was established as a guide for their own doctrine. Eventually, they annexed other influential sects including the Abhayagiri, and achieved an unrivaled position in the 12th century. This paper seeks to understand the sequence of influences in respect of Buddhaghośa’s commentarial works, which so motivated the development of the Mahāvihāra.
