This paper will discuss social norms and customs regarding sexual rights and identify the different sex and gender. Social construction of men and women leads to discrimination against women. Young women and girls are often considered as ‘symbol of honor’ for the family. As a result of that, patriarchal society wants to control on her body and sexual autonomy. On the other hand, many researches revealed that parents get their young women and girls to marry off as economic survival strategy and consider as burden out of poverty and safety. The ages of girls getting married are very young related to lower dowry costs in Bangladesh. So attitudes towards women as ‘honor and burden’ is also very inconsistent. Dominant social norms encourage seeing young women and girls with the concept of purity, virginity and chastity but it does not consider marital rape as crime at all. There are different manifestation of sexual violence against women and girls in this society. Rape survivors are not commonly accepted as bride whether widow as bride is accepted compare to rape survivors. This paper explore how gender hierarchies and masculinity placing some women at a greater risk of multiple discriminations. Heteronormativity, moreover, suggests that women should be feminine (meaning subservient and docile) and men should be masculine (meaning assertive and aggressive). ‘Heteronormativity’ focus on normative traits and norms of heterosexual behavior. Nowadays, ‘Heteronormativity’ is used as a metaphor to lead mainstream people’s thought. Homosexuality increases the risks of violence and restricts access to justice and the realization of rights. This paper will share cases and successful intervention of some campaign and project that focus on girls empower to challenge social norms.
