    Recently, a middle-aged couple was arrested for allegedly binding their 6-year-old adopted daughter with duct tape for 17 hours and, when she suffocated, burning her body on a mountain. They allegedly bound the girl up with duct tape and left home, returning 17 hours later to find her struggling to breathe. They moved the body to the couple’s car and drove to a nearby mountain. They allegedly burned the body to hide the evidence. This news have shocked all the people.
    In Korea, the Act of the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes entered into force on September 29, 2014. This law is designed to protect children from being victimized and to improve the investigation of child abuse cases. But, more than 80% of child abuse is occurring in a home. The child abuse by the child"s parents has become increasingly diverse types.
    This article reviews Korea’s criminal justice policies about child abuse crime to develop recommendations for the purpose of child protection more effectively. It also reviews procedural issues that arise in the prosecution stage of a child abuse case. Especially, it deals with ‘conditional suspension of prosecution’ and ‘Suspension and Effects of Prescription of Public Prosecution’ provision.
    Child abuse should be considered at the point of child health and welfare. Consideration is given to the impact of criminal intervention in child abuse cases on the processes of child protection.
