As you know, the Reformation Movement in the 16th century occurred with the slogans of ‘sola scriptura’, ‘sola fide’ etc. However, the Protestant theology rooted in the Reformation Movement is now being challenged; ironically, it is the doctrine of justification, which is the essence of the Reformation Movement that is being challenged. Dr. Seyoon Kim, who invented so-called ‘Deferred Justification Theory’ is the most famous scholar who challenges the Movement. What his theory claims may preach good influences to believers to live righteously but there is no doubt that his theory certainly involves critical flaws.
Deferred justification theory has strengths in leading christians to do good works. On the other hand, Deferred justification theory’s weakness is its assurance of salvation since it states that the justification of faith is only temporary. The theory states that if any believer does not continue his life in Christ or stay righteous, he or she will ultimately lose justification and salvation. It asserts that righteous life or good works is the criterion that determines the final judgment of the end time. Therefore it actually reflects the teaching of the Roman Church.
However, Christian Gospel does not teach its followers to perform good works in order to be saved. Rather, the legitimate and appropriate doctrine of the Scripture proclaims that fath in Jesus Christ and blessing from God are the only ways one can receive justification and salvation. Therefore, we must restore the fundamentals of Reformation Movement; not doing good works to receive salvation but to live the righteous life out of thankfulness for our reassurance of salvation.
