This study aims at elucidating that the cause of the pathological symptoms of the modern capitalist society lie in discrimination and inequality. Furthermore, it suggests that Won-Buddhist methods contribute to the treatment and integration for the sake of this ill society.
The symptoms of the modern and contemporary society represented by scientific civilization and capitalism are diagnosed and the causes are illuminated. As the first step to cure the symptoms, the meanings of ‘Cultivating the Spirit’ in ‘the Threefold Study’ and ‘The Four Essentials’ as social practices in the Won-Buddhist doctrine are explored. To begin with, causes of discrimination and inequality of the modern society are discussed from the gap between the great opening of the material and the great opening of the spirit. Second, ‘Cultivating the Spirit", namely the source of the great opening of the spirit, is explored as the means of healing in the personal and social dimensions. Third, as the practical method to overcome division in the social dimension, social integration through the practice of the ‘Four Essentials’ is discussed and then a proposal for the social healing and integration by religions including Won-Buddhism is presented.
The significance of this study lies in confronting the view that religiosity included in the internal awakening and faith is separated from the social and practical problems and instead verifying that the religiosity could lead to fundamental reformation in society and politics.
