Thermally activated building system(TABS) is the embedded water-based radiant heating and cooling system to make use of large surface area for heating and cooling in building. This may be integrated in the building structure or attached to it. Generally this utilize the concrete core of the buildings, usually the floor slabs. And space heating and cooling can be achieved either by means of TABS alone, or with additional systems such as radiators. Because there are small temperature differences between water flow and room temperatures, it has been regarded as an energy efficient solutions. The big thermal storage capacity of TABS makes it possible to separate in peak-time heating/cooling demand of building and heating/cooling equipment. Also this can utilize the free cooling strategy at night and accommodate the solar thermal energy. This can be operated when electricity is cheap at night and intermittently operated to reduce the distribution energy of the heating circuit pumps. Because TABS has a very high thermal inertia, the room thermal environment is different from the existing all-air HVAC system during and heating and cooling operation. Therefore this paper aims to investigate indoor thermal environment of thermally activated building system (TABS) during different heating operation conditions at first. The full-scale experiments were carried out in a mock-up test room with TABS. The experiments were aimed to evaluate the indoor thermal environment in low-temperature heating for office buildings. A mock-up building with 4 test rooms was located in central region of Korea (Chung-ju). And three prototypes of TABS were integrated into the ceiling slab, in which hot water pipe embedded within concrete slab (Type A), double-pipe embedded within concrete slab (Type B) and double-pipe embedded within 2-way hollow core slab (Type C)) were installed. In these experiments, we compared the thermal environment of TABS heating operation with that of combined operation with electric radiator. During experiments, we measured the supply water temperatures, return water temperatures, ceiling surface temperatures, vertical air temperatures, and globe temperatures. In results, it was found that through the operation of TABS with electric radiator room thermal environment can be maintained within comfortable ranges. And there is no thermal discomfort due to the vertical difference of air temperature, radiant asymmetry.
