VR movie, a totally new cinema, is emerging fast. Due to its characteristics based on virtual reality, VR movie is produced with a system very different from the one used in the traditional movie. That is why we can no longer apply the traditional film grammar on VR movie production. Filmmakers should come up with a new set of film grammar right for the movies made with virtual reality platform.
Creating a series of events that happen to the main character is important in the screenplay for the traditional cinema. However, what’s important for VR screenplay is how to build the world surrounding the main character. It’s because the audience can see any direction they want at any moment.
Depending on how much immersion you want to create, there are two ways of directing a VR movie director can choose. If the director hopes to create a limited amount of immersion, s/he can place an invisible wall between the characters and the audience. Even though the audience exist with the characters in the movie, the audience still doesn’t interact with the characters. If a total immersion is what the director wants, s/he can get rid of the wall and allow the characters to talk to the audience.
Lightfield technology is the key to the cinematography of VR movie. Though the audience exist in the movie, they are unable to move in the VR space. They are stuck in the spot where the camera was placed. But as the lightfield technology evolves, the audience will be able to move in the VR space as they do in the real space.
