초록·키워드
Without exception, all research done so far on the origins of protestant in Korea mentions the Bobingsa, which refers to delegates of Korea. This is because the visits the Bobingsa made to America motivated the missionary society of America to carry out their work abroad in Korea, which directly influenced the start of missionary work in Korea. The story of how the Bobingsa affected the spreading of American Protestantism can be summarized as follows. Firstly, upon the Bobingsa’s visit to America, he met a Northern Methodist priest named J. F. Goucher on a train headed to Washington and that is how missionary work started in Korea. Secondly, those that acted as the Bobingsa were linked to the Gapsin Coup and influenced the modernization of Korea both directly and indirectly, thereby spreading American Protestantism to Korea. As such, Christianity and the Bobingsa were very strongly linked together, but really just how their actions affected Christianity has not been studied at all. This research delves into the fact that the Bobingsa members asserted the need for modernizing Korean education, which was a huge helping hand that allowed American missionary workers to spread their mission in Korea. It will also take a close look at Kim Ok-Gyun who was a figure closely related to the Bobingsa members who realized the need for modernized education through meeting them. Moreover, it aims to look at how he influenced the missionary work in Korea by maintaining close ties with Protestant missionary workers upon fleeing to Japan after the Gapsin Coup.
