This paper will analyze the distortions in vision that cause conflicts between the major characters in EM Forster’s novel A Passage to India based on the concept of hybridity and ambivalence introduced by Homi Bhabha and that of the Panopticon introduced by Michel Foucault. By doing so, this paper eventually aims to reveal the limitations of the Western’s traditional way of understanding things based on visibility (ocular-centrism). Moreover, by describing how the characters from the ruling class and the ones from the ruled class try to understand each other based on what they observe and how they fail to do so, it will examine the paranoid anxiety of the rulers who perceived the distortions in themselves and the actual resistance of the ruling class to it.
