Using data collected from recreational anglers traveling outsider of their residential area, this investigation examined the relationship between their commitment to fishing, their place attachment to fishery sites and their adaptation of various coping mechanisms. Commitment was conceptualized as a multidimensional construct consisting of personal commitment and behavioral commitment. Place attachment was also conceptualized as a multidimensional construct consisting of three components: place identity, place dependence and social bonding. Coping mechanisms included two behavioral coping strategies (i.e., displacement, activity substitution) and one cognitive coping strategy (i.e., product shift). Results indicated that each dimension acted uniformly: each dimension of respondents’ commitment and attachment influenced a different type of coping. Results also demonstrated hierarchical linkages between commitment and coping mechanisms through place attachment. This work helps practitioners and researchers to predict which segments of recreation population are more sensitive to adverse conditions in recreational sites, willing to substitute other activities or places for the original activity or setting, and likely to engage in a cognitive coping process to continue their leisure participation.
