The King of Herod had 10 wives and about 15 children(Josephus, War 1:562-563; Ant. 17:19-22). It is quite difficult to know the exact name of their children and the relations between them and to decide who are elder or younger. In Mk 6:17 appeared the three Herod family members: Herodias, Herod Philip who was the first husband of Herodias and Herod Antipas second husband. Philip’s mother was Mariamne II who was a daughter of the high priest Simon. He was born in about B. C. 28. Antipas’ mother was Malthake who was a Samaritan woman. He was born in about B. C. 25. They were half-brothers and Herod Philip was the elder of the two.
Some scholars have thought Philip was the ruler in the countries of Iturea in Lk 3:1 because Mk 6:17 was cited in Lk 3:19, but Evangelist Lukas deleted the word, ‘Philip’ in Lk 3:19. This correction seems to suggest that Lukas Evangelist knew the Herod family correctly while Markus Evangelist did not. But that is not true. Markus Evangelist also correctly knew the Herod family. The first husband of Herodias has two names, d. h. Philip and Herod. And the second husband of Herodias has also two names, d. h. Herod and Antipas. The second husband was called primarily Herod. So Markus Evangelist wanted to distinguish between these two persons.
The Greek word ‘avdelfo,j’ has a comprehensive meaning. It was translated by the first generation of biblical scholars in Korea depending on the context by ‘brother(s),’ ‘elder brother,’ or ‘younger brother.’ And they thought Herod Antipas was the elder brother of Herod Philip. So they translated: “Herod had married Herodias, the wife of his younger brother Philip.” But that was not correct. When Herod had married Herodias, she was the wife of his elder half-brother Philip. So Korean translation should be corrected to reflect the accurate historical understanding.
