This study focuses on how the ritual has reinforced the mythic symbol of “Huangdi(黃帝)”. To understand it, this study traced how and by whom the ritual of Huangdi had taken place in each period and which political and cultural functions the ritual enabled in society. This study analyzed the ritual from the literature of the Warring States period in ancient China and more broadly the history of Huangdi from its earliest inception to the pre-modern period.
Through this work, it was possible to understand how views of Huangdi changed with each dynasty, dependent on the ideology of each period. Huangdi commonly appeared with characteristics including the first founder, the god of heaven, the ancient emperor, the immortal, and the god of medicine. In relation to each period and political discussion and the characteristics of the ritual, all have changed depending on the discussion. Moreover, this study has proved that some Chinese scholar’s opinion (“The Huangdi ritual has continued and never stopped from the ancient times until now”) is not true.
