Nitrate is an essential nutrient for living organisms; however, the release of excessive amounts in aquatic systems often causes environmental and ecological problems such as eutrophication. Nitrate intake in body can cause blue baby syndrome or methemoglobinemia that can result in brain damage and even death. Therefore, the reduction of nitrate is one of the important issues that can alleviate these problems. Lately, attention has been focused on the application of in situ passive treatment systems, such as permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), to remove nitrate in groundwater. The goal of this study was (1) to develop a removal method of nitrate in groundwater through laboratory column experiment using organic carbon materials (i.e., wood chips and gravel) and (2) to identify the nitrate removal mechanism. The column experiment has been conducted for a total of 1.5 years. The denitrifying bacteria have been shown to reduce nitrate by using nitrate as an electron acceptor during the denitrification process.
