Based on the corpus search, this paper explores what determines the constituent orderings in coordinate NPs containing me or I. Previous studies have depended on different rules or constraints such as Lexical Status Constraint (Grano, 2006) and the Modesty Principle (Kuno, 1987) because of the two different case forms causing different ordering patterns. In addition, little attention has been paid to comparisons between subject and object positions in terms of such ordering patterns. Assuming with Quirk et al. (1985), Kuno (1987), and Turley (2009) that the Modesty Principle applies regardless of the pronominal case or of the syntactic functions of the coordinate NPs, the paper therefore tries to provide a courtesy-based, comparative account for the ordering patterns in both positions. It is claimed that when the principle is not strongly appealed to, the trait of selfishness could surface to place the first person pronoun in the first conjunct.
