Thanks to the boom of the New Qing History, the frontier perspective on the Qing empire is more highly celebrated than ever before. However, the research has mostly focused on the northwestern frontier, ignoring the maritime frontier on the southeastern cost. This paper tried to compare the two different countenances of the Qing empire viewed from both of the frontiers. The New Qing History researchers used to put an emphasis on the modern, innovative and expansionist countenance of the Qing empire based upon the northwestern frontier studies. However, the Qing empire on the southeastern coast was only interested in the costal security and stabilization instead of properly understanding and taking advantage of the maritime dynamics of the nineteenth century. The New Qing History thesis concentrated on the northwestern frontier needs to be revised or supplemented through further research on the maritime frontier.
