This study compares The Woman in White written by William Wilkie Collins with The Woman in Black written by Susan Hill. What is noteworthy in the two texts is that the two novels deal with contemporary laws as their important themes. First, The Woman in White criticizes the reality that the laws of the time do not function properly. The laws of the time are interested only in the apparent facts exposed on the surfaces while they would not listen to the truths behind them, especially to the difficulties experienced by Laura and Marian as the socially and sexually weak. On the other hand, seen intertextually in relation to The Woman in White, The Woman in Black features a woman in ‘black’ dress who brings shock and terror to reason and rationality, considering that the system of the contemporary laws, which only emphasizes reason and rationality, gives rise to misunderstanding on and indifference to the ‘narratives’ of the socially and sexually weak such as single mothers.
