24 hours of a day may seem the same time for everyone, but the time is different depending on socio-cultural conditions. Use of time is also gendered. Numerous studies show that the different time uses according to gender and classes. Especially, for married women with preschool children, many studies show that severe time inequalities in various dimensions including the household division of labor. Time Use Surveys as important sources of data made such studies possible. In the case of South Korea, the National Office of Statistics conducts a survey using the time diary method every 5 years. This study uses the 2014 Time Use Survey to examine the time use of married women who suffer time inequality the most. Although married women have less discretion as the time for themselves are limited, they use the limited time they have based on their decisions. In other words, even with limited discretionary time, they use their discretion to use the time for particular leisure activities or invest their concentrated time for another leisure.
As such, since married women make decisions based not only on the conditions but also on their personal preferences or tastes, it is worth examining the time use management of married women who must use their time intensely and rationally more than anyone else. To do so, this study considers the total discretionary time as leisure time and distinguishes the leisure time into four types: killing time leisure, entertainment/sport leisure, self-development leisure, and participatory leisure. The result shows that due to the colonization of free time centered on TV and socializing activities, there is a limitation for married women to enjoy various leisure activities. Nevertheless, the study finds the continuation time inequality by gender in the married women who concentrate on certain leisures in order to maximize the efficiency of their time chosen as the best choice under the limited condition.
In conclusion, the study identifies the need for diversification of leisure activities and the need to consider the activeness of married women including the their demand for specific leisure activities.
