This paper discussed the writing time, characters, and author of Hallimbyeolgok (翰林別曲) . As for the time of writing, based on the record in ‘History of Goryeo’, ‘Akji’ (Music book), ‘Sogakjo’ (Chapter), and ‘Akjang-gasa’ (Collection of songs), in addition to the lyrics of ‘Sogakjo’ written by Confucian scholars during King Gojong, there is a view that it might have been written during King Gojong or in between the second to seventeenth year of King Gojong. Another view is that it might have been written after King Gojong’s time.
This paper, however, attempted to estimate the writing time of Hallimbyeolgok based on various records of the banquet held in Choi Yi’s private residence in May during the 32th year of King Gojong (1245), and records at the time of the rule of Choi Yi.
This paper further estimated the writing time of Hallimbyeolgok in the article of the banquet held in May during the 32th year of King Gojong while discussing the usage of the letter ‘wi’ that seems to be the basis for the song creation in Palbangsang and can be seen as stylistic acceptance, phrase adding to the fun and lingering sound in Palgyeongsi.
During the time of the capital transfer to Ganghwa, Choi Yi invited high-ranking civils, military officials and common generals, including the King, to his private residence and hosted a banquet. This was in order to solidify his will to protest against Mongolia and also a measure to maintain power. In the process, Choi Yi created a new poetry style, Hallimbyeolgok , while simultaneously boosting the excitement of the banquet and conveying his own message.
