The purpose of this study is to cover how German Expressionist Movement in arts influenced to Expressionist dance and to reveal characteristics fo late expressionist dance. In order to research the topic, overview of German Expressionism and development of Expressionist dance is introduced. Also, general charactersitiscs of late expressionist dance is covered focusing on Pina Baush and her Tanztheater. German Expressionism, which tried To find a new domian of expression of human being`s inner world, was created out of desire to get over turbulent background of the contemporary society after World War I and to surmont feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and pain of people. Expressionist dance was started in 1920-1930 inspiring by expressionic movement in arts and dancers, such as Isadora Duncun and Michale Fokine. Pioneers of expressionist dancerss were Rudolf Von Laban, Mary Wigman, Kurt Jooss. Late expressionst dance is started in the 1960s by students of Jooss` Folkwang School. Pina Baush and her Tanztheater are represented as late or new expressionist dance. Pian Baush who is successor of expressionist dance shattered away conventional concept of choreography and boroadened the boundary of dance as an art, opening up a new dance era. She enlarged the domain of dance into that of total art, with her Tanztheater style, which has collage-typed choreography, combined drama, cinematic, and theatrical images with music. German expresionist dance was once introduced by Japanese dancer Ishii Baku in 1926. Ishii`s Korean students Choi Sung-hee and Cho Taek-won who were pioneer of Korean New Dance tried to realize expressionist dance in Korea in their dance drama style New Dance. I believe that more studies on expressionist dance and its influences on Korean dance are needed to provide new background for 20 century`s Korean dance history.
