The purpose of the present study is to investigate how territoriality plays a role in a group of young children. I observed and analyzed how children build a territory and show what territorial behaviors in free play at early childhood educational institutions. The subjects of the present study were 182 children aged 3 to 5 years old in K kindergarten. After establishing the framework of analysis on territoriality based on observation of 50 children aged 3 to 5 years old in K Kindergarten, I observed the children"s free play for two hours, twice a week from August 7, 2017 to November 30, 2017, according to the territoriality model selected in the preliminary investigation. In addition, to see their relationship between territoriality, we asked the homeroom teachers to examine the sociality and place attachment of children. As a result, the territory of children during free play was formed by two to four children, and the location of the territory was found to be in corners or sides more than in the center, and most children build the territory with learning materials. The children stayed around 20 minutes in the territory and displayed a territorial behavior. And the boundaries of the territory were solid and individualized with bodies, learning materials, and language. Children use physical and verbal defense to defend their territory, and they play more often with fixed boundaries and location of the territory. There was a significant difference depending on their age, and indoor or outdoor space, but there was no gender difference. Among the children"s territorial behaviors, boundary control was correlated with the children"s sociality, and the territory location was correlated with peer–to–peer interaction, a sub–factor of sociality. Also, it was found that the territory location was correlated with the place affection and place dependence, sub–factors of place attachment. And the physical defense among territorial behaviors, was correlated with place intimacy, and boundary control was correlated with place dependence.
