Due to terrorist attacks by the world jihadists movement that followed the September 11 attacks, the word “Islam” hardly conjures up the principle of tolerance in the minds of most non-Muslims of our time. If one were to ask the average Korean or any non-Muslim the question: “Which of the world’s religions is the most intolerant?,” the most likely answer would be Islam.
However, quite contrary to most non-Muslims’ negative views of Islam, many Muslim and non-Muslim scholars including Sir Hamilton Gibb, Sir Thomas Arnold, Fazlur Rahman and Mahmoud Ayoub, characterize the religion of Islam as a tolerant religion. According to them, Islam possesses a magnificent tradition of interracial and interreligious understanding and cooperation.
Yet, through an insidious symbiosis between fanatical Muslims and hysterical Islamophobes, the very opposite image of Islam as one of the most malevolent stereotypes of our times has emerged.
According to the interpretations of many Muslim scholars, the Quran, which is considered the foundation of both divine law and metaphysical knowledge for Muslims, presents a universal and an inclusive perspective of a divine being that responds to the sincerity and commitment. Among scriptures, the Quran uniquely developed awareness of religious plurality, even appearing to offer a rationale for the existence of competing religions as shown in Surah 5:48.
Nevertheless, the Quran also includes verses that state that Islam is the only way to God. Though the statements by the Quran are not fully consistent on the matter of interreligious relationships and religious plurality, this is due to particular circumstances and issues between Muslims and the people of the Book (which include Jews and Christians).
Therefore, the verses must be interpreted in relation to specific political situations between Muhammad and the Jews of Medina or neighboring Christians. Thus, such verses should not be referred by neither Muslims nor non-Muslims in order to negate the positive verses of the Quran, which are more numerous and emphatic in their insistence on mutual recognition.
To conclude, the Quran, the foundation on which the religion of Islam is based, challenges us in a time of discrimination, exclusiveness and conflict, by maintaining that we all have faith in one God and compete with one another righteously and respectfully.
