Educational travel has become increasingly competitive because of the benefits students gain from study abroad experiences, such as intercultural development and academic variation. Although these benefits are significant, recent global pandemics have raised concerns about the health risks associated with international travel. To explore students’ travel decision made with health risks, a survey was conducted on a sample of Korean university students during the peak phase of the 2009 H1N1 flu outbreaks. Data collected were intended to inform guidelines for an effective health education program targeting concerns associated with student mobility. The study found that students lack knowledge about travel disease, underestimate health risks and rely on informal health information. In particular, those who would not cancel their travel plans if a situation arose reported lower perceptions of health risk compared with students who would cancel their plans. Partnerships between practitioners in educational travel programs and health officials should be formed to provide accurate health information about student travel and to facilitate well-planned, safe and healthy educational experiences for students.
