The aim of this study was to assess the body composition estimated by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to identify family history of hypertension in college students. Thirty four subjects with family history of hypertension (FHHTN) and twenty five subjects without a family history of hypertension (NTN) aged between 20 and 24 years were recruited for this study. All subjects were instrumented to measure blood pressure and body composition by BIA at rest. We were analyzed the correlation of body mass index (BMI), fat mass (FM), lean body mass (LBM), and percent body fat (Body fay%) with mean arterial pressure (MAP). The result showed that there were significantly different among BMI, Body fat, and blood pressure (p<.05) in NTN group. But in FHHTN group, there were not significantly different among BMI, Body fat, and blood pressure. From these results, we were known a high possibility that was increased BMI and Body fat as the blood pressure increasing in FHHTN. Therefore the people who have a family history of hypertension, they have to be controlled the BMI and Body fat through increasing regular exercise and level of physical activity because they may have higher risk factors of future hypertension development.
