We identified active components from the methanol extract of Opuntia ficus-indica seeds. Five compounds were identified: 9‘-O-methyl isoamericanol A (1), americanol A (2), 3,3‘-bisdemethylpinoresinol (3), isoamericanin A (4) and adenosine (5). We evaluated the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and melanogenesis inhibitory effects of these compounds. In antioxidant test, compounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 showed 12-47% of ROS generation inhibition at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. In NO assay, compounds 2 and 3 are similar with the positive control, quercetin by displaying IC<SUB>50</SUB> of 57.80, 57.27, and 51.44 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, melanogenesis inhibitory effects of compounds 2, 3, and 4 were 3 to 5 times higher than arbutin, a well-known skin whightening agent. These results indicate that Opuntia ficus-indica seed can be an effective natural cosmetic ingredient.
