The purpose of this study was to examine the applications and appearance of Jeongja- gwan worn in the 16th to 19th centuries through a review of the literature and paintings of the time. The study found Jeongja-gwan was named after a hat worn by Jeongja, a Confucian scholar in northern Sung. During the 16th to 19th centuries, Jeongja-gwan was used as an official hat(gwanmo) usually worn by men of the noble class when going out. The hat was more often worn by Southern School Confucian scholars who respected and worshipped Lee Hwang. It was also worn during official or funeral rites and by Gyujanggak government officials. In Joseon, Jeongja-gwan was manufactured to imitate an official hat worn by Jeongja, which is illustrated in the Portraits of Kings and Subjects, Samjae Dohoe, Yijeong Jeonseo, and Seonghyeondo. The illustrated hat, consisting of an inner and outer hat, is linear-shaped. Thus, the linear shape was applied to Jeongja-gwan manufactured in the late Joseon period. It is reasonable that official hats portrayed in the portraits of Park Se-chae, Yoon Bong-gu, Lee Chae, and Hong Jik-pil are considered Jeongja-gwan because they were recognized as such when the paintings were made. The Jeongja-gwan in each of the four portraits are also linear-shaped. This study also found that Jeongja-gwan of the late Joseon period and that of the last Joseon period differed from each other in outer appearance: the former was linear in shape and the latter curved in.
